I’ve been watching TV a lot lately (a byproduct of living in hotels) and I’ve decided that watching too much 24-hour a day news is bad for you. Sometimes it’s better to let the story develop and then report it rather than guess what will happen next.
For what it’s worth I support our military and the actions they are taking. For the most part it looks like this is being done the right way. I believe that it was going to come to this anyway. A guy like Saddam is not just going to turn over a new leaf just because we asked him to. For the past 12 years we’ve been giving him “time outs.” Well, nice time is over and it’s time for a spanking! It would have been nice to have UN support but if they aren’t willing to back up their own resolutions then screw ‘em. Talk is cheap if you aren’t willing to back it up. The reality is that Iraq will be a better place once Saddam and his demon spawn children are gone. I’ve yet to hear one argument against that statement, that includes those on the anti-war side. And it’s this simple observation that makes it very difficult for me to understand current opposition to this operation.
SIDE NOTE:
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that we encounter opposition from Russia and France. It’s been well documented that they have opposed containment of Iraq for their own personal gain. France even helped build a nuclear facility for them. Hmmm wonder what that was going to be used for……
The weird part is that both sides of the argument want the same thing: Saddam gone and a quick conflict with minimal civilian and coalition casualties. So we aren’t arguing results we are arguing methodology. We gave diplomacy 12 years to work and it’s highly doubtful that another month would have changed a thing. It’s very obvious that inspections did not accomplish the intended goals. Inspectors were never given full access to facilities, personnel, or documentation even with the threat of “serious consequences” by the UN. The fact that Iraq has already used weapons against us that were banned by past resolutions, and never disclosed to inspectors should drive that fact home. Any way you slice it something drastic had to be done to get things to change.
Do you think Saddam hears us now? Good.
